For anyone that's ever wondered if they have what it takes to run an ice cream shop, there's a new Flash game that's right up your alley. Papa's Freezeria from FlipLineStudios places you in the shoes of either Alberto or Penny, working to create, blend and top customers' sundaes just right. While there's not much story to it, the gameplay is surprisingly more fun than actually working a real minimum wage job.
The gameplay in Papa's Freezeria is fairly straightforward. Each day at the shop, multiple customers come in and order a sundae with a specific set of ingredients. Once orders are taken, they are placed on a ticket to help you piece the sundae together to their exact specifications. The second step is then to pour the right type and amount of ice cream in a cup, along with a flavoring such as cookie dough or chocolate. From here, the sundaes are blended together. Lastly, toppings like whipped cream, syrup, sprinkles and fruit are used to finish off the sundae. Once completed, the sundae is submitted to the customer for their approval. The more quickly and accurately you complete the order, the more the customer will tip you.
While this may sound a bit tedious, Papa's Freezeria is actually very fun because each of the four stations involve a different skill in order to succeed. The order station is all about time management, making sure you take orders quickly even while creating the sundaes. In the build station, the key is timing, where if you hit the fill button too soon or too late, the quantity of ice cream will be off. Once at the mix station, the sundae process slows down, meaning you'll have to start building other customers' orders but remembering to remove the sundae from the mixer before it's over-mixed. Lastly, the topping station is all about coordination, as it sees you move the cursor side to side in order to evenly top the sundae without spilling anything.
As you move through the game, you'll earn more money and unlock new customers and toppings. Money can be used to either buy furniture or shop upgrades. The furniture is merely ornamental, such as posters and signs. Shop upgrades can help you out in the game, such as providing the blender with a fast-forward button.
Overall, Papa's Freezeria is a worthwhile time-waster at worst, and a surprisingly fun new addiction at best. As a free action game with a fairly high replay value, you have nothing to lose by checking it out.
